Max Leavitt: The Old Country

This project underwent many stages, each of which was a new learning experience for me. As it evolved I became indebted to more and more people with a wide variety of expertise and interests. I am deeply grateful to Profs. Al Fried, Shirley Blum, and Lee Schlesinger for their guidance and support while allowing me the freedom to find my own way.

YIVO, the Institute for Jewish Research, was indispensable in the obtaining of information on Wysokie Litewskie. This information would have been useless without Luba Burrows and Leonard Dudka, who gave me their time and talent to translate the material.

Thanks must also go to the LOAD, for their typesetting accommodations, and to the Center for Instructional Resources for the use of their facilities. In addition, the Humanities Division was extremely helpful throughout the project.

I offer my deepest gratitude to my friends for their valuable advice and constant availability as sounding boards especially Nell Gutman, Leslie Kahan, Charles Lane, Tom McWilliam, Janice Leder, Patti Reuter-Lorenz, and Shelly Squires.

The continual interest and encouragement of my relatives has been of utmost importance to this project. Many of the gaps were filled by their good memories and willingness to help.

Without doubt my family's love and financial support gave the project the freedom it needed to come to fruition. To my brother, whose deep understanding of the family helped me gain insight into my own goals, I am deeply grateful. My mother's extraordinary memory and penchant for saving were essential to my understanding of the way things happened. My father's eye for design and sympatico with the material is also greatly appreciated it was his infinite patience and perceptions that really enabled this project to fall together.
